The Parent, Carer Brain: A Superpower with a Slight Glitch
You know the type or might be the type... The parent, the carer, the one who holds it all together. The one who remembers every appointment, stocks up on snacks like a professional survivalist, and advocates for their loved ones with the fierce determination of a superhero on a mission.
Yet, somehow, amid the scheduling, the snack-stashing, and the superhero-level multitasking, there's one crucial thing that tends to get misplaced. No, not the car keys (though let’s be honest, those are probably in the fridge😏). It’s something even more important: self-care.
The Walking, Talking Calendar
Let’s start with appointments. If there were an Olympic sport for remembering check-ups, school meetings, therapy sessions, and the due date for that important form (the one that took two weeks to fill in), you’d have a gold medal.
You don’t just remember them, you anticipate them. You are the human equivalent of a diary with an inbuilt alarm system – except the alarm is a vague sense of doom at 3 a.m. when you suddenly realise you haven’t booked next year’s dentist appointment.
Snacks: The Ultimate Survival Tool
You’ve learned that snacks are more than just food; they are an essential part of maintaining world peace. A well-timed apple or biscuit can prevent a meltdown, and a perfectly positioned packet of crisps can buy you five minutes of quiet.
The inside of your bag or car resembles a small corner shop. Granola bars? Got them. A squashed banana? Of course. Emergency chocolate? Absolutely – but truthfully...that’s for you.
Advocating Like a Superhero
When it comes to speaking up for your child or the person you care for, you transform into a mix of Sherlock Holmes, a seasoned lawyer, and a motivational speaker. You research, you push for answers, you challenge policies, and you do it all with an unwavering determination fuelled by love (and possibly caffeine).
You are their voice when they need one, their champion when they feel unheard. But somewhere in the chaos of standing up for them, fighting battles, and making sure they get what they need, you forget to advocate for yourself.

The Self-Care Black Hole
Here’s the thing: for all your incredible, awe-inspiring abilities, you often treat self-care as an optional extra rather than a necessity. It’s as if looking after yourself is something to be done if there’s time, and when is there ever time?🙄
But here’s the truth (and you probably know this deep down): you cannot pour from an empty cup. Running on fumes might feel like second nature by now, but even superheroes need to recharge. Taking care of yourself is not selfish; it’s essential.
So, this is your gentle, kind reminder to take a breath. Drink the cup of tea while it’s still hot. Say yes to help. Take five minutes just for you – not for planning, not for organising, just for being.
Because the world needs you – but more importantly, you need you too.
