Overthinking? Is Your Brain being Dramatic—Tell It to Calm Down?

Ever found yourself lying awake at 2 a.m., replaying that awkward thing you said five years ago? Or convinced that your boss’s "Let’s chat" email means you’re about to be fired? Welcome to the overthinking club—membership is free, but the mental exhaustion is costly.

Our brains have a natural tendency to focus on the negatives—it’s called the negativity bias. Back in caveman times, it kept us alive (“That rustling in the bushes? Definitely a sabre-toothed tiger.”). Fast forward to today, and instead of tigers, we’re dodging imaginary disasters, assuming the worst, and second-guessing every decision.

But here’s the thing: your thoughts aren’t always facts. Just because your brain says, “I’m rubbish at my job” or “Everyone thinks I’m annoying” doesn’t make it true. Your brain can be a bit of a drama queen, exaggerating, catastrophising, and serving up worst-case scenarios like a bad soap opera.

Time to Tell Your Brain to Chill

If overthinking has you stuck in a spiral, try these:

- Breathe like you mean it – Deep, slow breaths signal to your nervous system that there’s no emergency. Inhale for four, hold for four, exhale for six.

-Write it out – Get those thoughts onto paper. Seeing them in black and white can stop them from swirling around your head like a storm.

- Challenge your thoughts – Ask yourself, “What’s the evidence for this?” and “Would I say this to a friend?” Chances are, you’re being way harsher on yourself than you’d ever be on someone else.

- Distract yourself with something soothing – A good book, your favourite TV show, or even staring at a candle flame for a few minutes can help redirect your focus.

Remember, your brain is a powerful tool—but you’re the one in charge. Thoughts come and go, but you don’t have to believe every single one. So, next time your mind starts spiralling, take a deep breath and remind yourself: not every thought deserves your attention.
