Mental Clutter: The Brain’s Junk Drawer (And How to Empty It)

You know that drawer in your kitchen—the one crammed with takeaway menus, dead batteries, and a mysterious key that unlocks... something? That’s your brain on stress. Mental clutter is real, and just like that drawer, it only gets messier unless we do something about it.

The Power of the Scribble

One of the easiest ways to declutter your mind is by writing things down. Nooooo, not in a perfectly curated journal with hand-drawn doodles (unless that’s your thing). I mean scribbling down whatever’s swirling around in your head—work stress, to-do lists, that weird thing you said in a meeting three years ago that still haunts you. Get it all out.

Why? Because your brain is not a hard drive. It’s not designed to store an endless list of worries. Writing things down gives your brain permission to let go. It’s like handing your stress over to the paper and saying, "Here, you deal with it."

Now, Destroy the Evidence

Here’s the fun part: once you’ve dumped all your mental clutter onto the page, destroy it. Shred it, rip it up dramatically like you’re in a bad soap opera. There’s something oddly satisfying about physically getting rid of your worries. It signals to your brain that those thoughts are no longer needed.

The Mental Benefits of Paper Annihilation

  • Instant relief – Seeing your stressors disappear feels ridiculously good.

  • Less overthinking – Your brain won’t keep circling the same worries if they’re already written down.

  • More focus – With less junk in your mental drawer, you can actually think clearly.

So, next time your brain feels like a cluttered attic, grab a piece of paper, dump your thoughts, and then happily destroy them.
