The Helpful Human’s Guide to Self-Care (Without the Guilt)
You’re a helper. It’s in your DNA. You’re the one people turn to when they need a listening ear, an extra pair of hands, or a miracle before lunchtime. You’ve built a life around supporting others, whether in health and social care, emergency services, or call handling. But let’s be honest—when was the last time you applied the same level of care to yourself?
The Never-Ending To-Do List of Goodness
Helping is a bit like Pringles—once you start, it’s hard to stop. There’s always one more person to check on, one more task to squeeze in, one more "quick" favour that somehow turns into a two-hour commitment. The problem? There’s only one of you, and you are not a rechargeable device (though let’s be real, even our phones get plugged in more often than we do).
Then, when you finally hit the point where you can’t do any more, that sneaky little voice pipes up: You should be doing more. You’re letting people down. Other people manage, why can’t you?
That voice? It’s lying. It’s about as helpful as an umbrella with holes in a thunderstorm.
The Reality: You Can’t Pour from an Empty Cup (or a Shattered Mug)
The world (and you) need you, in good emotional and mental health, not version of you who survives on caffeine, four hours of sleep, and the sheer force of obligation. That version of you is running on fumes, and—newsflash—fumes are not a sustainable energy source.
Sometimes, you will have the time, energy, and capacity to go the extra mile. Other times, brushing your teeth and showing up is the best you can do... both are okay. Truly, deeply, honestly okay.
What You Can Do (Without Guilt)
1. Prioritize like a pro – You wouldn’t attempt to rescue everyone from a sinking ship alone, so why try to do it in everyday life? Focus on what’s realistic.
2. Say “no” (or at least “not right now”) – It’s not selfish. It’s survival. A tired, overwhelmed you is no use to anyone.
3. Celebrate the small wins – Maybe you didn’t save the world today, but did you drink some water? Eat something green? Avoid death staring at anyone? Success!
4. Remind yourself: Doing your best is enough – Some days, your best will be incredible. Other days, your best will be getting through the day. Both count.
5. Laugh at the madness of it all – If you can’t fix it, at least find the humour in it. Like how people always tell you to “take care of yourself” right before they hand you more work. Classic .
Final Thought: Be As Kind to Yourself as You Are to Others
If you’d tell a friend they deserve rest, compassion, and a break, then why should you be any different? Helping is wonderful. Caring is vital. Neither should come at the expense of you.
So today, do what you can. Let go of what you can’t, and most importantly—no guilt allowed. You’re doing more than enough.😊
