Have you ever run out of fuel?
Picture this: your car’s fuel light has been flashing for miles, but you keep pushing on, hoping to reach just one more destination before refuelling. Eventually, the car sputters, stalls, and leaves you stranded. Now, replace the car with yourself. Sound familiar?
Far too many of us treat rest as a luxury rather than a necessity. In caring professions, whether social care, health care, emergency services, or call handling.
The focus is always on helping others. You go the extra mile, put in that overtime, and convince yourself you’ll rest “later.” Hhhmm, but what if later is too late?
Burnout doesn’t arrive suddenly; it creeps in. It starts with feeling a little more exhausted than usual. You struggle to concentrate, your patience wears thin, and small tasks begin to feel overwhelming. Before you know it, you’re running on fumes, physically, mentally, and emotionally drained.
•You don’t need to earn rest.
• You don’t need to wait until you’re at breaking point to justify taking a break.
•Rest is not a reward for working hard; it’s a fundamental part of being able to work at all.
Taking regular breaks, setting boundaries, and prioritising self-care doesn’t mean you’re slacking—it means you’re sustaining yourself.
So, let this be your permission slip. Take that break now, not when you’re too exhausted to function. Your wellbeing matters just as much as the people you care for. After all, (and you know by now I’m going to say this 😉) ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup’....so....make your self-care Inevitable.
